Please Note!

Colors vary depending on the darkness of the leather to which they are applied and the amount of dye used. Colors tend to be darker than the chart.

Inside

Pitch

Once upon a time there was pitch. A sticky pine resin that hardens into a rigid, plastic like material when heated and allowed to cool. If you have ever seen an insect trapped in "amber" at a museum, you have seen pitch.

Medieval mug makers used pitch to make the original leather "jack" that Ulfric vessels are loosely based upon. They could melt it, pour it into the cup, swirl it around and PRESTO, the cup was waterproof.

The downside of this process was the pitch itself. It is little more than refined sap. It smells strongly of pine and causes a pine like taste for quite some time.

Bees Wax

In an effort to circumvent the negative aspects of pitching, craftsmen turned to other materials. This resulted in the widespread use of bees wax in "jack" making. Bees wax has the same sealing properties as pitch but has a pleasant scent and has little or no taste. The downside of bees wax however is a tendency to stay soft and pliable. This makes wax lined vessels susceptible to dings and gashes of the wax lining which can result in leakage.

Paw Wax

Ulfric Leather lines our vessels with a material that gives you the best attributes of both original products. By emulsifying clean brewers pitch, with natural bees wax we create a strong durable coating with a sweet fragrance and little to no residual taste. This sealant is far superior to both of it's components and further sets Ulfric Leather vessels above all others.

Regardless of what tinting option you choose, Ulfric Leather will finish your vessel with a durable water resistant product called Resolene. This top coat is applied over the entire vessel, including laces and artwork. It is crystal clear when dry and adds a little shine to the finished product.

Resolene resists water spots and stains and further adds liquid repellent properties to your mug.

It is important to note however, that even the addition of this top coat does not make the outside of your mug waterPROOF. You should never submerge your vessel or wash in a dishwasher.

Hi-Lighting

This process creates a warm brown lusterous finish to all uncarved portions of your vessels. It stains all carvings and stampings a deep chocolate brown that is almost black.

This is the most rustic and dramatic look for leather and is HIGHLY recommended by Ulfric.

The finish is somewhat uneven and natural, giving a "woodgrain" like texture.

Dye

Ulfric Leather offers many dye choices for your mug as well. Options range from a full single color to a more intricate coloring of a design. Ulfric uses only the best quality leather dyes, not paint. Dye soaks into the leather instead of laying on top like paint. Dye will not rub or scratch off.

It is also possible to combine Dye and Hi-lighting, resulting in a lusterous brown background for your dyed artwork.

Leafing

Ulfric Leather offers leafing in both Gold and Silver. This is truly a dynamic and noticable finish. It takes on a natural antique appearance with small cracks and flaws but maintains a bright and shiny surface. Recommended for smaller details or design pieces and not an entire mug body.
